Foulsham in 1839
Foulsham is in Eynsford hundred, 110 miles from London. The area of the parish is 3,100 acres, with a population, in 1831, of 958, about one-third agricultural. The town was nearly destroyed by fire in 1770 ; since that catastrophe the houses have been rebuilt on a more regular plan and in a more respectable style.
The church is a handsome building of flint and stone, rebuilt at the same time as the town. There is a corn-market on Tuesday, and two yearly fairs, one for small dealers and one for cattle ; beside a statute fair for hiring servants. The living is a rectory, of the clear yearly value of £602, with a glebe-house. There were in 1833 six day-schools, with 104 children, and two Sunday schools, with 145 children. |
